Halloween Safety: Tips for Families Near and Far

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Well, this weekend is Halloween once again. Every year, we’ve got the BIG questions to answer: what to be, what candy to buy, where to trick or treat, which parties to attend. In the midst of all of the hullabaloo, don’t forget that there are simple ways to make the holiday a safe AND scary one, all at the same time.

This week, we’ve put together some tips for our neighbors everywhere. Whether you have kids or are a big kid yourself, use these tips to have a frightfully fun Halloween!

  • Driving: It’s a crazy time to drive, especially when holidays are on weekends and drinking is more prevalent an activity. Look into Designated Driver services in your area as well as just taking a taxi from point A to point B.
  • Trick or Treating: Many neighborhoods have dusk-time trick-or-treating hours each year. See what’s available in your area and contact the local shopping centers and malls as well, as many sponsor family-friendly trick-or-treat times.
  • Giving Candy: While you might be handy in the kitchen, it’s best to opt for giving away pre-packages, recognizable treats. Grab those big bags of candy at the store and your neighborhood parents will thank you!
  • General Safety: It gets dark early this time of year, so plan your destinations accordingly. Avoid houses without a porch light on and only visit areas and houses of people you know.

If you’re looking for things to do this Halloween weekend, check out our local events calendar. We’ll see you next week and go easy on the treats. We don’t want you to have a bellyache!
