Home Improvement Tips: Increase Curb Appeal in One Coat

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Not so long ago, we decided that we needed to repaint one of the rooms in our home. I was dreading the task if for no other reason that I didn’t want to have to spend a whole day putting multiple coats of paint on the wall. Sure, I could have gotten in some quality ESPN/drying time, but let’s all be honest: it really wasn’t how I wanted to spend one of my days.

Since we always talk to our clients about curb appeal, it didn’t really seem I had much room to talk when the curb appeal of this one room in our home was in much need of improvement. So begrudgingly, I headed over to our local Home Depot to see what I could find.

The guy behind the counter in the paint section must have seen the pained look on my face. He asked me what my project was and when I added that I wasn’t looking forward to spending a whole day painting, he got a smile on his face. “Let me show you something,” he said. Willing to see anything at this point that would make my home painting and curb appeal improvement project less of a pain, I followed.

We ended up in front of the Behr Paint display. Chips of colors everywhere. I just looked at him. Then he showed me a new product that Behr had just come out with called Behr Premium Plus Ultra – a primer and paint product all in one. With raised eyebrows, I told him the color paint I was needing to touch up (I’ll save you the details) and he just looked at me and said, “One coat.” One coat? Really? I was skeptical. Especially since a gallon of this stuff ran around $30 for flat interior and the other Behr paint was running about $20-$22. He told me the $8 was worth it. I picked up two gallons and headed back to the house.

And Houston, we have curb appeal! Doing my entire 14′ x 16′ room took me not even the full two gallons and a single coat of paint. No additional coats. And might I say I’m pretty impressed. Given I would have definitely gone through at least 3 gallons of the other paint (which I know since I remember the first time I painted it) and a much longer day with having to apply two coats, I’m sold. As a matter of fact, the three gallons of regular paint would have cost me more than the two of the Premium Plus Ultra! I’m not a pitch man, but I know good stuff when I see it.

If you have a curb appeal project coming up for your own home, this paint also comes in exterior formulas. Do yourself, your Realtor and your neighbors a favor and spruce up your home for less (less effort and less money) on all fronts.

And if you need something to do between your front door and Home Depot, check out our local events calendar for Ouray, Ridgway, Telluride and Montrose. We’ll see you in the neighborhood!
