Homeowner’s Insurance: Time for a Checkup?
Thursday, November 12th, 2009When’s the last time you sat down with your insurance agent (your who?)? Yes, your insurance agent. Once we put a homeowner’s or renter’s policy into place, it’s easy to forget about it. We pay our premiums, get insurance and go about our merry ways.
In that case, it’s definitely time for a checkup!
Could you tell your neighbor exactly what your policy covers?
Do you have a photo inventory of the major and valuable possessions in your home?
Have you informed your insurance company that you had an alarm or swimming pool installed?
It’s possible that your current coverage won’t cover the value of acquisitions you’ve made. This is especially true if you haven’t had a policy review in the past few years and have upgraded furniture, kitchen fixtures or made significant other improvements to your property. If you rent and you’ve bought something major like a bicycle, new TV or just inherited your grandmother’s china, it’s also time to call your insurance agent.
A policy review can take less than a day and get your coverage adjusted to suit your current needs. Why not pick up the phone and give your agent a call? With the winter season coming up and the potential for pipe breakage and other cold-weather damage, don’t get left out in the cold if you need to activate your insurance.
