Southwestern Colorado Swimming
Friday, June 8th, 2012Of all the summer activities Colorado has to offer, does anything sound more refreshing than jumping into a pool or a swimming hole? There are so many ways to enjoy swimming in our region, from competitive swim teams to simply splashing around, from structured indoor lap pools to natural swimming holes. Here’s how to find the best places in the San Juan Mountains for summer swimming:
Swim Teams
The Delta Barracudas, a competitive swim team for all ages, has offered quality coaching and competition opportunities to Delta County residents since 1956.
The Telluride Torpedoes is a competitive team for youth aged 7 to 18. They practice at the Telluride Community Pool, described below.
The Montrose Marlins organization offers a competitive swim team for youth, and a masters swim team for adults. Both teams practice at the Montrose Aquatics Center, described below.
Pools and Swimming Lessons
The City of Delta’s public swimming facilities include a lap and fun pool, a tot pool, and a warm-water therapy pool. Swim lessons are available for all ages.
The Telluride Community Pool is a public, outdoor pool, open from June 2 through August 26, 2012. Lessons are available for children and adults.
The Montrose Aquatics Center offers indoor and outdoor pools with open swim and lap swim times, aquatic fitness classes, and children’s swimming lessons.
The Ouray Hot Springs Pool is open year-round. It offers public swimming, a water slide, aquatic fitness classes, and swimming lessons for all ages.
Natural Outdoor Swimming Spots
Confluence Park, in Delta County near the confluence of the Uncompahhgre and Gunnison Rivers, is 265 acres of natural beauty, including hiking and biking trails—and a 60-acre lake with a swim beach.
The San Miguel River Trail is an easy stroll that follows the river along the length of the Town of Telluride. There are several swimming holes along the trail, and dogs are welcome.
