Three Simple Ready-for-Winter Tips for You and Your Home

Maybe you don’t live in Colorado (where it’s decided to get a bit “wintery”), but fall is definitely here and while the weather is still favorable, it’s time to get the house ready for colder weather. This is something we struggle with each year, but hopefully our foibles can prevent last-minute panics on your part. We put together a simple list of tips to get you ready for the winter:

  • Extra towels – grab them. You can use them for wrapping exterior pipes, covering plants or blocking drafty under door areas. If you make a pile now of towels that you don’t mind using for these tasks, you’re more likely to not have to use the towels you don’t want to at the last minute. Need some throw aways? Garage sales and thrift stores are great resources.
  • Wiper fluid – stock up. Grab the blue stuff that’s rated for freezing temperatures. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing you haven’t done this. It’s usually when you’re driving through snow or sleet and your wiper fluid stops coming out. Go ahead and top-off your reservoir now and make it a point in 15 days to fill-up again.
  • Line-up the tools. Get the snow shovels, snow blowers, winter boots and gloves at the ready. Put everything where you need it so that when you wake up one morning soon to a winter wonderland, you’re ready – or as ready as you’ll ever be – to get moving and stay warm doing so. It’s also a great time to check the supplies in your car – flashlight, a blanket, spare tire, snow chains and a extra pair of socks (yes, socks!).
